[Trombone-l] Cimbasso or tuba?

I'm on the sub list for Cleveland Opera (now Opera Cleveland) for tenor and bass trombones, and for tuba and cimbasso. When we do the Italian stuff, either the tubist would borrow my cimbasso (especially when Imre Pallo comducted) which I have since sold and replaced with a slide instrument; call it "planned obsolescence", or I would play cimbasso. However, as with many orchestras, the sound does NOT always trump contracts. The tubist played his small CC for Turandot las season - no option available, as I was subbing on bass trombone for part of it as well - double wammy.

The staff there is setting up the list and I've been hired to play tuba with "possibly some bass trombone" for a gala concert with a soprano. I would bet big money it's "trombono basso" stuff; I'll know when I get the music. If you present the conductor with a fait acomplis (sp?), you usually won't be questioned. But I'll have the bass bone in the car ;-)
