I get the weapon part, but on a mildly serious note about travel, I just fly
to Chicago and back on Southwest and had no trouble  with my trombone as a
carry on.  I did take all the liquids or gels out of my case and put them in
my checked suitcase.

Of course, it was a tenor, not an alto.  That may have been my saving grace.
