I won’t speak to authenticity of the tone, but I have an alto “sackbut”, 
where I used the bell off of a “replica of a revolutionary bugle”.  I also 
won’t comment on whose revolution we're talking about.  But the bugle was 
made in India, so maybe it was there revolution?

They can be had for about $10.00 at Harbor Freight.

The bell diameter is about 4 inches.  But the real challenge is to figure 
out where to cut the peashooter trombone and where to cut the bell flare, so 
that they butt up nicely.  After that, a ring of tubing from the bell flare 
you just cut from the peashooter, will work as an outer ring, so that you 
can solder the thing together.

And in that it's an alto with a little bell, it fits in carry-on luggage, 
though I wouldn't try to carry it on, these days.  The way I play alto, it 
should be considered a weapon.
