Wasn't there a PDQ Bach piece that took advantage of all those 
instrumental quirks?

Or am I just thinking of "Fanfare for the Common Cold"?

not only mechanical devices have this problem -- don't you just love it 
when you
can hear the woodwinds clattering away in the middle of a technical 
solo? :)

trombone content: my old bach 42 has a similar problem :)
