I have both the Humes & Berg Stonelined large bass and a Denis Wick. I would second the recommendation to save your money by buying the H & B. Pick up a Wick or Jo-Ral if you happen across a good deal on a used one later on. If you will be a professional player after school, you will probably eventually want both.
The H & B is one of the very best mutes I own. I removed the rubber ring around the cup, and the felt has long since all fallen off, but it sounds exactly like I think a cup mute should sound, and it responds evenly all the way down into the pedal range.
I bought the Wick because I do so many gigs with tenor players who use them, and they really do sound different from the Stonelined cups. I found that it needs a hole drilled in the bottom of it to speak the way I want in the low register.
I have one other cup mute also, a beautiful handmade Peter Gane mute that I bought in about 1990 or 91. It doesn't sound like anything else that anybody uses, so I basically never use it...but it really is a beautiful sounding mute.

Subject: [Trombone-l] Bass Trombone Cup Mute Recommendations
Hi Folks,
I need to buy a bass trombone cup mute. Looking around I see (in no
particular order):
- Jo Ral (adjustable and non-adjustable)
- Denis Wick (adjustable)
- Humes & Berg
- Trumcor Classical
- Trumcor
This mute will be used with a Getzen 1052F 9.5" bell bass trombone,
mostly in orchestra and concert band playing. On occasion it might be
used in a big band or pit orchestra.
Any learned recommendations are appreciated! Thanks.
Doug
