One nitpick: you mean all music that can be performed live - lots of
music genres rely on overdubs and other technical effects that can't
be done in concert.
I'm less severe than you are: I have some really wonderful studio
recordings in my collection, both jazz and classical (and lots of
other kinds of music, too) that don't sound sterile at all. Some live
recordings are also top-flight. But it's not an either-or
proposition; great recordings can happen either way, for most musical
groups.
