Doug,
I prefer any of the adjustable variety, either the Jo-Ral or the Denis Wick.
I have found it very helpful being able to change the timbre of the mute
by adjusting the cup. I prefer a different 'cup' sound when playiing solos,
(ie-Deux Danses) and another sound when playing in big bands. Also,
depending on the brands the other trombones have, being able to adjust to
match their sound is helpful.
Another benefit is being able to close the mute all the way to the bell and
use it as a practice mute. I like to play through excerpts a couple of
times with the mute, then a couple of times without, and alternate that
several times. I find it really helps me acquire that 'dark' sound I
desire, plus feels very open and free blowing after I use the mute. This is
also good to use in hotel rooms, and while it is a little louder than a
Yamaha Silent Brass system, it affects the articulations less, for me
anyway.

Hi Folks,
I need to buy a bass trombone cup mute. Looking around I see (in no
particular order):
- Jo Ral (adjustable and non-adjustable)
- Denis Wick (adjustable)
- Humes & Berg
- Trumcor Classical
- Trumcor
This mute will be used with a Getzen 1052F 9.5" bell bass trombone, mostly
in orchestra and concert band playing. On occasion it might be used in a
big band or pit orchestra.
Any learned recommendations are appreciated! Thanks.
Doug
