Doug,
I say buy the Humes and Berg (Stonelined) mute and use all the money
you'll save to pay for a good lesson or a few cases of beer. The
Stonelined is the standard cup mute in the business and it works and
sounds fine. No need to pay $100 for a mute. Just make sure you get
the "Large bore bass trombone" size or whatever they are calling it
nowadays. Just make sure it is the biggest one they make. They used to
have one that they called the "bass trombone" size, but it really just
fits the 88H and 42B size horns. You must get the largest one they make.
(Note: This only applies to Stonelined cup mutes. For a straight mute
you will have to go with an aluminum mute like the Tom Crown, Wick, or
Jo Ral.)
