[Trombone-l] - stroboconn

Hi Tim,

The only tuner I've had that would 'hear' other notes was that old gray
Korg, before the chromatic tuners came out. I don't remember the model.
With two of them, you could do a tuning exercise similar to one that
came naturally to the Stroboconn (affectionately know as Strobocop since
the '80's). For example, you could switch one to Bb and the other to F.
Then, while sounding a tuned Bb, look on the other tuner to see exactly
where an in tune (with a Bb) F would fall. The Korgs weren't nearly as
sensitive, of course. So there was a limit to what you could do
compared to the strobe tuner. With the help of another player, the
twelve window strobe tuners are fantastic for getting the 'in tune'
sound in your head for ANY interval.

This weekend I tried setting my electronic tuner (Korg CA-1) to a single
pitch, and playing other notes lowly and loudly to see if any overtones
would register.

I did not succeed in making this happen.

Anybody else tried this with more success? Maybe play a pedal Bb as
loud as
possible, while setting the tuner to F, D, Ab, C, etc.?

If you remember, Sam contributed a post not that long ago that talked
about
hearing overtones. Can anybody see them as well, on a simple tuner? Or
does this always require more sophisticated equipment?

What happens at the Stroboconn I'm unclear on; I only have an electronic
tuner, and it will not read partials. Come to think of it, maybe it
will if
I set it manually to one pitch, I'll try it tonight.
