The Deacon was Thad Jones' nickname at the time, in 1958. He is the
composer, arranger, and primary soloist of the chart, but Al Grey
shares the spotlight on the studio recording, from December of that
year. (By the early 1960s, Thad was mostly called "The Elder" among
the younger guys in the Basie band, and he wrote another
self-featuring chart with that title for the Basie band, which he
took with him to start the Jones-Lewis band.)
