My first band director had us to try to blow out his cigarette lighter -
a wind-proof Zippo. He was gone before I graduated from matches to a
lighter and figured out what was going on.

I never had the opportunity to use a stroboconn but my college
instructor, H. Joseph Owens had this monstrous machine with colored
tubes. He had it sitting on top of a cabinet in his small office where
I took my lessons.
The cabinet was about seven foot tall and this giant thing was another
two feet! I had to lean my head way back as I played to see the
machine.

He would have me warm up and then play long tones as loud as I could.
As I played each tube would light up (with a different color) from left
to right but the next tube wouldn't light up unless the tone got louder.

So louder and louder I would play, trying to get the last da%^$# tube to
light up. I would leave the lesson so upset because I never could get
the tubes to light up all the way to the right!

I graduated from college and moved on, a sad & disappointed trombonist!
Going on to live my life assuming I was an utter failure!

I found out several years later that he had the friggin' thing rigged
and no one had ever been able to get the last tube to light up!

When I was first told that it was rigged I was mad as hell. Then I
realized why I had opted for ISU as my undergraduate school.....H.
Joseph Owens was a very wise old man!
