Getting off topic in the interests of pure pedantry - or maybe not.
I agree that rest is important. But strength does sometimes increase
without size increasing. The proof is some recent studies on weight
training in the over 70 age group. Strength increased significantly, but at
that age hormone levels did not support adding protein to cells, and muscle
biopsies (ouch!) proved no muscle growth had occurred. The explanation
given was that the strength increase was neural based. More recruitment or
something, I'm not sure they gave the details.
So us oldtimers probably ought to do heavy singles in the weight room, none
of this low intensity high repetition garbage. Hee, hee.

Good point, Dean! You know all the bodybuilding and phys ed literature says
that muscles basically don't get stronger unless they get larger (which is
probably hard to see in facial muscles which are very thin, but spread
across the face or lips). Muscles don't grow during the exercise (which is a
form of "breaking down" the muscles--AKA "catabolism") they grow during the
rest period (AKA "anabolism" . . .as in anabolic steroids. . .lest you folk
are still kinda disbelieving) after having been encouraged to grow by hard
exercise.
