To All,

I have been reading this thread with interest because
I take Toprol XL daily due to a heart condition. It is in
the beta-blocker family and is sometimes prescribed to
regulate or slow down your heart-beat.

In general, I agree with Wayne in that performance
without a crutch is the better way to go. However, I also
believe that the side-effects from taking a beta-blocker
one time, or even occasionally are minimal. However, I can
attest to the fact that taking Toprol XL daily definitely
produces side-effects in my body. Unfortunately, I don't
have much choice other than going to a different
beta-blocker and perhaps a different set of side-effects.

For me, the side-effects from a daily beta-blocker
dosage include increased feeling of cold in hands and
feet, tingling in fingers, reduced stamina and general
tired feeling, insomnia, dry mouth (I carry at least 2-3
bottles of water to every gig), and decreased sex drive.
All of these are documented side-effects for this
particular drug.

I write this only to say that contrary to some
opinions, daily use of a beta-blocker can produce
undesirable side-effects. Occasional use, probably not,
but that may vary by individual. If I didn't have to take
it, I would not take it, even if it reduced anxiety.
Preparation, practice, and confidence are the best
performance enhancers there are.

John
