Good point.  And don't fergit the matra:  "If it smells, it sells."

Seriously, sales driving the bus in this regard.  You're right.  
Educators are to blame, too.

The good student will practice a technically challenging piece slowly 
and gradually reach his goal, achieving success.  The lesser student 
will practice too fast, too soon and never reach his goals, thereby 
sounding "sloppy."  We live in a microwave world, but that can't work 
with the trombone.

Just my two cents.  I'm with ya here.
