Along these same lines I heard a story about a violin
player from years back (i forget name sorry) that went
through great links to sound proof his practice room.
When onstage he was so prepared nobody ever heard a
mistake. H.L. Clarke, story goes that if he was to
give a performance he would get his solo to the point
in practice that he could play 10 times through with
no mistakes. What percentage of musicians are willing
to invest the time and effort to play at the truly
great level of Clarke, Mendez, Andre and others some
of which read and contribute to the list. The rest of
us "mortals" can come up with excuses. i.e. family
sleep food work, that sat night party and beer bust.
I'll shut up now
