[Trombone-l] Air Horn Symphony

I really want one of these rigs for the Los Angeles freeway system. I just know my fellow motorists would "appreciate" it.

The advertisement for the commercial boat horns lists SPL as 145 dB at 1 meter. Apparently, the one meter is a standard way of reading horn output. But 145 is very dangerous. You simply cannot be right in front of such a sound and not be injured. You would doubtlessly lose your hearing and possibly be killed or rendered unconscious. The figure of 145 dB is freqently used for howitzer or cannon output near the front of the muzzle.

Chris

I thought this message from Doc Bryant (apparently one of the leaders) on the Horn Honking website was also somewhat appropos of our hobby / and /or profession:

[quote]
 Dear John Q. Public:
Yes, we have an unusual hobby, helping preserve the voice of American Industry. I suppose we could have a quieter, more introspective hobby. Stamp collecting, or butterfly netting maybe? What would you say to that? But sorry, we are happy with our hobby. It doesn't have us out all night hanging around gin mills and saloons. It's never driven us to take recreational drugs. It does not make us abuse small animals and children.

In short, its a wonderful hobby. And we get lots of fresh air with this hobby. In that respect, it beats sitting in front of the tube watching Monday Night Football or really worrying if Kobe Bryant did the dirty deed to that young lady.

In this hobby, we have met some wonderful folks. You have too. Normal they are, just like you. Church going even. You know, the kind of people you look up to as "pillars of the community".

It's too bad you don't have an interest in our hobby. But that is perfectly fine with us. Feel free to miss the next trip out to honk horns with us. We respect you enough not to drag you out against your will. We hope you respect us enough not to critize our hobby when there are others far worse that we could have adopted. As they say, "Be thankful for small favors!"

And if you don't appreciate that, then go out and see if you can get a life.
