[Trombone-l] Sound & Hearing Loss

I'll pipe up again and recommend that folks at risk (and that's
all of us at one time or another) to GET and WEAR musician's
earplugs.

Yes, they are more expensive than the Etymotic ER-20s and have to
be fitted for you (a custom mold of your ear canal) by an audiologist
but you WILL be able hear with them in - it's great fidelity across
all frequencies, there is just LESS sound (9, 15, and 25 dB filters
available).

The trouble with noise induced hearing loss is that by the time *you*
notice anything yourself, it's too late - the damage has already been
done. The only way to protect yourself is to know what risky situations
are (ie using a sound level meter until you get the idea) and either
avoid those situations or wear hearing protection when they are
unavoidable. http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/erme.aspx
has info plus lots more on the right-hand sidebar
