Thanks to everyone who responded with their experiences!  It was surprising to see how many trombonists this has affected at some point.  

My student who has it is actually doing very well.  After about 2 weeks he can now play up to D above the staff without any air leaking out the corners (he had range up to high Bb before).  His embouchure looks weaker on the affected side, but hopefully that will get better with more time.
