[Trombone-l] WARM-UP WITH MUTE?

Well, I guess that I'm in the minority here in the mute warm-up dept. - but
I knew that. When I studied with Jeff Reynolds some years ago, he gave me a
series of interval exercises, most with a dynamic grouping of mf-mf-FF-mf.
He threw in an option of doing these in a straight mute. These (beginning
with the mute) quickly became my regular "first notes of the day" routine. I
would never begin playing bass trombone this loud open, and I certainly
don't move huge amounts of forceful air with a practice mute (Hurts!), but
somehow this routine blows out the cobwebs for me and sets me up for
longtones or what have you. This is not for everyone, however, perhaps not
for most.
