Dear List,
Today I received the Bill Pearce Anthology in the mail. All I can
say is WOW. What musicianship. Everything that I preach in the studio is so
beautifully displayed here. One beautiful sound after another played well in
tune with impeccable taste. His magnificent upper register is never used
just to show off. He also has facility to burn.
My father had an album of Dick Anthony's 16 Men with Bill playing
something on it. Too bad I can't remember what it was, but I remember
listening to that over and over again.
In a way, I feel really guilty. I heard him live when I was 17 and
didn't have the sense to realize greatness when I heard it. Now that I'm
older, I realize now that he was really an artist. Bill now suffers from
Parkinson's disease, and more than likely will never play again.
I would highly recommend that everyone on this list flood the
Nightsounds program (www.nightsounds.org) with a request for the Touch of
Gold Anthology. It is 50 tunes on 2 CD's for $28.50 including shipping. It
will take several weeks for the order to process, and they don't take credit
cards.
