Fellow Musicians,
The Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago, choir and workers of the Municipal
Theatre (Teatro Municipal) in Santiago, Chile, sound an alert to the
international community, concerning the grave crisis which has been imposed
on us by the administration.
In January of this year, the core orchestra was reduced by more than 15%,
using freelance musicians as replacements. After the management neglected
payment to the freelance players for lapses up to 8 months, these temporary
players refused to perform until their overdue wages and taxes had been
brought up to date.
The administration, instead of quickly resolving the conflict with the
freelance players, decided to extend negotiations causing the cancellation of
a performance of Verdis Othello. The following day they proceeded to take
vengeance on all the musicians, unveiling their desire to re-restructure the
orchestra and suspend the rest of the 2006 season (Opera, Concerts and Ballet
w/Orchestra) including the remaining sold-out performances of Othello.
The administration of the Municipal Theatre has resorted to hiring foreign
musicians and productions to replace its own orchestra and chorus. Please be
advised that working conditions in the theatre cannot be assured as there are
serious financial and safety aspects in dire need of repair.
Please reflect on your ideals and morals as to whether or not the
administrations' behavior is worthy of your good faith and support!
I would ask you to share this with your colleagues, and at the same time ask
your discretion as to the source of information.
Thank You
