That’s pretty much what I found with a knockoff that I made for myself.  It 
solidified the tone, much like adding lots of weight to the mouthpiece.

But it also scared me to put any stress on the slide.  Slides are really 
easy to bend and the force needed to hold it in place was easily enough to 
splay the slide tubes.

On the other hand, if it were soldered in place, so that it was just a 
cross-brace down at the handslide crook, then it wouldn’t need to be 
adjusted so as to push on the slide tubes away from each other.  If it does 
what I think it does, I’d rather solder a gusset in the crook.
