That is SOUND advice Sam. Just like the best way to hang a picture straight
is with your eyes. It seems to me that too many students get hung up with
their equipment when what they should be doing is learning how to interact
with it. I've been playing the same horn for 30 years and still use the
very first mouthpiece I ever bought in 1970. I just strive to get the sound
I want from it and my ears tell me if I am achieving that goal. And of
course, it's not just your own sound you need to worry about, but also how
your own sound blends with the section and how the section sound blends with
the band. An experienced player is able to get a better sound from a heap
of crap than a beginner would get from the most expensive horn ever made.
Only your ears can help you achieve the desired results. And they cost
nuttin'.
