In a current TV commercial, the government of Thailand is inviting everyone
to come celebrate the 60th anniversary of the reign of King Bhumibol (the
world's longest serving monarch). It turns out that the king is a really big
jazz fan. He plays the clarinet and has played with many of the big time
jazz stars from the US, including Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden, Lionel
Hampton, and Maynard Ferguson. A very short clip is shown in which the king
is jamming with some all-stars and, quick now, who's that trombone player?
Hey, it's Urbie Green! The music track that plays on the commercial is
curiously non-studio sounding. Could this be something the king recorded or
is it just some obscure track they lifted for free? By the way, the king is
loaded. His wealth is estimated at between 2 and 8 billion dollars.
