It could be worse, you could play viola.
We have a viola player with the praise band I work with at church, and he
can read concert pitch as well as play by ear.
But he is the first one I ever met that was not limited to reading alto
clef.

I too wish it were so, but reality is that all (well most anyway) music
published for alto trombone is written at pitch. This includes all the
classical orchestral literature.
