By the way, y'all, I've had great success doing just that with a rifle
cleaning rod, a wool gun cleaning swab and some fine-grit (~1000 grit)
polishing compound.
I put the cleaning rod in a drill (which I hold stationary in a vise) and
run the swab up and down the inner bore of the outer hand-slide. I can get
the inner bore so that it's mirror smooth and it feels that way when I play
it, too.
But then I have to wash that grit out of the slide and that can take a
while. Perhaps that was the problem with the slide you tried, it was still
full of grit.
