[Trombone-l] airy sound-new mpieces

Hi Bob,
I use a GW Kadja (4G-ish is size) on one of my tenors and a GW Matanuska
(kind of like a Warburton Arnold Jacobs) on my tuba. Both mouthpieces
made a significant improvement. On the tenor, it was probably the one
biggest single improvement of any equipment change that I can
remember...except, maybe, for trading in my Bundy for a King 3B.
Perhaps I exaggerate, but the improvement was pretty dramatic, better
sound and endurance. I bought a Chinook for my bass this summer after
trying lots of mps in preparation for playing bass bone in the TSO this
season. Thought is was fantastic until I played in the section. It was
too dark! (How about that, Wayne?!) I settled on a Griego .75 because
it was way easier to sound more like a tenor in the upper register.
Anyway, there seems to be a consistency in the 'concept' of sound in all
three mouthpieces...a certain heavy clarity (whatever that means). One
unusual thing about the design is the rim contour. Very flat. My first
thought was "sure, I'll try it, but this rim is going to kill my chops."
As it turns out, the rims are very comfortable. I figure it's because
the mouthpiece pressure gets distributed over a larger area with such a
flat rim. The inner edge of the rim is still rounded. I've never tried
any of their peashooter mouthpieces, so I can't comment on them.

Speaking of the mp break-in period, other than Dean, does anyone have
definitive feedback on their use of the Giddings & Webster stainless
steel
models?
Also, BTW, there was a thread way back about movie screen credits given
to
the individual players. I was excited (yet the girlfriend was more than
a
little perplexed) to report that at the VERY end of the screen credits
for
'Happy Feet', all the players were listed, BY INSTRUMENT!!! Check it
out.

This is very true. Some exercises you can do every day, with maybe a day
off
a week. Not weights. I never lift more than 3 days a week, and never two
days in a row. There are all kinds of other strictures, as well, e.g.,
amount lifted, reps, etc.
