I agree, and I'm quite surprised that BBC News actually gave space to
announce the passing of Maynard Ferguson.  I would say that probably nine
out of ten people (maybe more) I have spoken to about my old boss have never
heard of him, and that would include a few musicians too.  But then there
are plenty of pop stars out there who are famous to the younger generation
that I've never heard of either, simply because their 'music' does not
appeal to my ears.
