[Trombone-l] Bach 42 mouthpiece receivers

Hi,

I'm new here, having recently picked up playing again after a 20-year
layoff. (I'm pleased to find that it's like riding a bike.)

I have both a Bach 42 straight horn and a 42B F-attachment. The 42B
dates from about 1969 and the 42 from 1977. I purchased both horns
brand new so I know that the answer to my question below is not that
someone monkeyed with one of these horns.

A long time ago, I purchased Schilke mouthpieces and Schilke needed
the serial numbers because they said the mouthpiece receivers were different.

Schilke appears to have been correct. I've recently purchased a
Marcinkiewicz mouthpiece (which I heartily recommend). It fits the
42B perfectly. In the 42, it has to be seated and given an extra
twist or it will rock slightly. The Marcinkiewicz people measured
both Schilkes and found that the taper on the mouthpiece for the 42
was more rapid. They said that they thought that the mouthpiece
receiver on the 42 was poorly manufactured by Bach.

Finally, to the question: Does anyone know of information regarding
Bach mouthpiece receivers that helps to clarify the difference I'm
seeing? Does the receiver in the 42 have a special name or something?

Thanks very much,
Howard
