I think this is one of the biggest problems we are having with this - 
semantics.  Lacquer usually refers to a specific group of quick drying 
finishes.  Varnish is a much abused term - or at least much more 
general.  You can buy polyurethane "varnishes," natural "varnishes", 
water based "varnishes."  It might have once meant natural "tree" based 
finishes but those days are over.

Later - I'm off to varnish some furniture - I think I'll use lacquer.
