I teach my daughter that anything you do that could possibly offend the
senses of someone else is probably the wrong thing to be doing. If you
offend someone's sense of sight, sound, touch, taste or smell, then you
are wrong. Now, offending someone's sensibilities is completely
different. That's about opinions. But, you can respect other's
opinions....in fact you might even learn something from them.

The bar is being consistently lowered. That's just human nature.
Humans want to excercise their infantile and selfish tendencies to be
individuals who don't have to follow the rules. And...some rules
shouldn't be followed, but that's not the point. What is acceptable
for each generation changes....and not always for the better. I'm not
old enough to remember hat tipping....but I'm old enough to remember
taking your hat off indoors. In the workplace, we've seen the
introduction of Casual Dress Fridays. These days, you'd think every
day was Friday. I don't really care all that much personally, but
dressing up is a sign of respect for the situation. It's why
orchestras wear tuxedos. It's why people wear tuxes at weddings. I
think the majority of people want to receive respect without having to
give it. That's human nature....but we're acting on that instinct more
and more all of the time. Pretty soon we'll all be getting married in
jeans and tshirts.

I love the trombone.

Like where and when? I certainly don't dispute that civilizations
decline, and that etiquette and manners are a massive part of fighting
that decline, but I'm not sure that booming stereos and iPods are
outside the boundaries of what our current etiquette is capable of
dealing with.
