Thanks for all who replied.  A few people suggested soldering a coin
onto the lever.  Very clever!  I would have done this, except it isn't
my bass, and the owner wants it replaced.  I suppose I'm not in a
position to argue, since I need to use his bass again in a couple of
weeks!
