Bass BonIest?  Is he the thinnest bass bone player
around?

You could always do what my section used to do:  Use a
toilet plunger for everything.  Put it in cup side out
for a straight and cup side in for everything else. 
Adjust the tone by distance from bell, portion of bell
covered, angle, etc.  It's not perfect by any means,
but it's sure a lot easier to carry.....
