Unfortunately, sometimes the only difference is that one is more
grumpy than the other.
I think a variety of skills can also be a factor. A good amateur
might be proficient at brass band or trad jazz, or some particular
favorite genre, whereas a good professional should be proficient in
many styles or genres.
That's definitely not a definitive answer. It can be a very shady
distinction at times.
