I'm forwarding this at the suggestion of Eric Kidwell, who forwarded me this information from ALA Connect. "I saw this news in ALA Connect this morning.  I find this alarming, and as the Connect poster noted ' Services that are not measured are not valued by the institution.'"

Of interest to anyone working in an academic library.  Thank you to Kirsten Leonard, Executive Director of PALNI,  for posting this earlier to the ACRL members community:

Please review and comment on the rule proposal to drop the Academic Libraries survey data gathering from IPEDS. It is critical that this data is available for libraries to understand trends and provide impactful service. It is also important to signal the core nature of library and information services to the mission and ability to serve students and faculty learning and research. Services that are not measured are not valued by the institution.



Those academic institutions that are in the Higher Learning Commission accreditation region are well aware of the impact of removing all but one parenthetical reference to libraries in the accreditation standards. It has reduced the visibility and resourcing of the library as a core component of the university. Removing the IPEDS survey will further erode the ability of libraries to demonstrate value, impact, and resource needs to meet teaching and learning mission.
