Subject:  Summer MBA course in Entrepreneurship

Hello everyone,

If you are looking for a summer MBA elective to take, I would like to let you know about ENTR 555: Entrepreneurship.

This course serves as an introduction to the opportunities and challenges of creating and managing an entrepreneurial company or managing new businesses in a corporate environment, so it should be a useful class for you, even if you don’t plan to start your own business.

We focus a lot on issue arising in the entrepreneurial process of recognizing, evaluating, and exploiting entrepreneurial opportunities, whether those occur in a new business, a small business, a family business, a large company, or a nonprofit.

Some details:


·         The major deliverable is either a business plan for a business idea or a consulting project for a small company.  Both have proven to be useful learning experiences for students in the past.

o   Some who have written business plans have competed and won cash in our annual New Venture Challenge (including the $7,500 first prize).

o   Those who have done consulting projects (which I  often helped them find) added a really nice line to their résumé right before graduating.


·         The course meets two nights a week (MW) during June.  The business plan/consulting assignment is due in parts throughout the summer.  The first deliverable (industry analysis) will be due the third or fourth week of June.  The second, third, and final deliverable will be due during July or early August.


·         The last night of class will be June 28th.  All deliverables after that point will be submitted via Moodle, and all communication will be via email or cell phone.


·         The course counts as an elective for either the Entrepreneurship or Marketing concentrations in the MBA program.
