Please see the message below from Dr. Lohrke concerning ENTR 531: Entrepreneurship – Concepts and Consulting.

Hello everyone,

If you are considering taking one of your two required electives for the MBA degree this summer, I would encourage you to consider ENTR 531: Entrepreneurship – Concepts and Consulting.

This course counts towards either the Entrepreneurship or Marketing concentration, but I would suggest it as an elective for several reasons, even if you aren’t considering one of these concentrations.

1. We will focus on key issues related to consulting, including industry and competitive analysis. This is useful training that can be applied to jobs across different industries, and it serves as good introduction to topics you’ll be discussing in MNGT 561: Strategic Management.

2. Your major class deliverable will be a case that, if of sufficient quality, could compete at a national competition and/or be published. We’ve had some students do one or both of these each summer we’ve offered this class. For example, see the story on page 23 of Season's about four (Accounting) students from the last time we offered the class (http://bit.ly/26xSRcA).

3. The case can be written based on research from secondary sources like the Wall Street Journal or from a consulting project for a company. If it’s done from the latter, the focal company can be one you work for or a local company (For example, I’ve already talked with Randy Adamy, the owner of O’Henry’s, about the possibility of doing a project for his company). A consulting project completed during your MBA program makes a great line on your resume’.

4. The class will also include a strong focus on digital marketing (like social media, apps, etc.), given the increasing importance of these media for many companies. This is one of the few classes in the MBA program that will focus on key vocabulary and concepts related to digital marketing.

5. The class will meet twice a week (Tues/Thursday 5:30-8:30 pm), but only during June. The final case, however, will not be due till the first week of August, which will give you all of July to finish writing it.

Please email me if you have any questions about ENTR 531.

Thanks,

Dr. L.
