Below is an important communiqué from Dr. Phil Kimrey, VP of Student Affairs at Samford. It covers the expansion of health services being provided at Samford and an option of enrolling in an Injury and Sickness Medical Expense Plan being made available to Samford students and their spouses/dependents.

It requests that before classes start in the Fall you complete an online waiver process in order for Samford to collect information about the health insurance coverage of graduate students.

Dear Graduate or Professional Student:

University Health Services will offer expanded services beginning this fall, including a newly renovated clinic space in Seibert Hall and the addition of a part-time physician on staff. We will also provide insurance billing for any office visits or services provided in the clinic. If you do not have insurance coverage, you may still utilize the clinic; however, you should expect to be responsible for usual and customary charges associated with your care. A portion of your charges will be expected at the time of service and will not be billed to your student account. This is a change from our previous billing practice.

Samford University recommends all students carry health insurance coverage in order to protect your good health and financial stability. As a graduate or professional student, you are not required to have health insurance unless living in university-owned housing. Nonetheless, we strongly encourage you to maintain a health insurance policy while completing your education. To that end, an Injury and Sickness Medical Expense Plan is available to students choosing to participate. This plan insures the student against major expenses accompanying an accident, illness or hospitalization. Students not adequately covered or those needing primary coverage are strongly encouraged to consider participation in this program.

In order to better understand the needs of our campus community, it is essential that we know the rate of participation of our graduate and professional students as it pertains to health insurance coverage. Regardless of your status, insured or uninsured, we request that you complete an online waiver process in order for us to collect this information.

Prior to the start of classes, please go to the Samford University home page at www.Samford.edu<http://www.Samford.edu> and click on the "Student Insurance" button. At this site, you will be able to indicate your current coverage status by following the directions outlined in the "waive" process. If you are so inclined, this is the same site from which you may view information regarding the premium rates, benefits and exclusions for the voluntary plan. Open enrollment for this plan is August 1, 2011 through September 15, 2011. Options for spouse and dependant coverage are available as well

Should you have any questions, please contact University Health Services at SUhealth at samford.edu<mailto:SUhealth at samford.edu> or call (205) 726-2835.

Sincerely,

R. Philip Kimrey, Ed.D.
