Subject: Business Elective Opportunity -- FINC525 Practicum in Financial Management
Larry, please forward this to the active MBAs.
There is an elective available to you which involves the active management of over $1.1 million of Samford's endowment. The Bulldog Investment Fund is managed by students. They organize by economic sector and hunt for attractive stocks to add to the portfolio. They also analyze the existing portfolio to determine whether the investments are still attractive. Oral and written presentation are made, and private votes taken on proposals. At the end of the semester, the managers make a presentation to Samford's Board of Trustees.
For MBAs, there are no prerequisites. Most applicants have an interest in the area of investing, but few have actual experience. So, if you don't think you can do this, think again. Across four different classes, their combined performance would put the Fund in the top 2 percent of professionally managed funds.
Acceptance into the course is made by application and possible interview. The application form and instructions are attached. [Ignore the FINC450 designation; undergraduates participate too and FINC450 is their equivalent course number.] Decisions will be announced in early November.
I encourage each of you to evidence your interest by spending some time visiting one of our meetings held in the Dean's Conference Room on Mondays from 5:30pm to 8pm. If your schedule prohibits you from attending, I hope you will stop by my office (DBH323) and introduce yourself.
I will try to visit Dr. Jones' Finance class, also on Monday, to talk with you about the Fund and answer any questions you may have.
I hope you will join this singular experiential learning opportunity.
